The Competitive Environment Of British Petroleum Management Essay
The Competitive Environment Of British Petroleum Management Essay This paper is basically about the analysis of British Petroleum PLC (Bp). The analysis covers the competitive environment of the company in terms of its stance in the midst of its various competitors and also how attractive is the industry in which the British Petroleum company belongs to. Apart from the competitive environment, this report also identifies the key business strategies of the company and also the various resources and capabilities of the company that has given the company an edge over it other competitors. In analyzing the competitive environment, business strategy and identification of the various resources and capabilities of British Petroleum, the following frame works will be used; sporter five force, strategic groups, Bowmans strategy clock, value chain analysisâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦. OVERVIEW OF BRITISH PETROLEUM (BP) The British petroleum is one of the worlds largest energy companies and also one of the largest vertically integrated oil and gas companies in the world, which provides its customers with fuel for transportation, energy for heat and lighting, and also retail services and petrochemicals products for everyday use. The BP Plc operates across six continents which include: Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe, North America and South America and their products and services are available in more than 100 countries in the world. British petroleums operations involve exploration, production of gas and crude oil, marketing and also trading of power, and natural gas liquids. British Petroleums headquartered is situated in London United Kingdom, and it has employs about 80,300 people as part of its labor force. Bp has various brands which include the Ampm, Arco, Castrol, Aral, Wild bean cafà © and Bp itself and the energy mix of the British Petroleum is a mixture of oil, gas, solar, wind and biofuels. BP is a company which focuses mainly on petroleum, but has some interest in alternative energy which shows that the company does not only specialize on oil and gas only like some of its competitors does. THE COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT OF BRITISH PETROLEUM (BP) . In analyzing the competitive environment of the British petroleum, as earlier stated, a very useful tool to consider is the five forces model of competition which was developed by Professor Michael Porter of the Harvard Business School in 1980, this model identifies factors that affect the organizations competitiveness in the industry and also help the firm to adopted the appropriate strategy in order to enhance its competitive advantage and also protect itself from threat as well. The five forces identified by porter include: Threat of entrants from organisations currently outside the industry Power of suppliers i.e. providers of inputs e.g. staff, IT, accommodation Power of buyers i.e. recipients of products/services Threat of substitutes i.e. things customers might buy instead Competitors/rivalry competition within the industry THREAT OF NEW ENTRANCE: The threat of entrance into the oil and gas industry is Low due to the fact that there is high barrier of entrance into the industry. Some of the companies that constitutes the oil and gas industry like British Petroleum uses heavy and very expensive equipments at well sites For example, pumping trucks and other huge equipments, huge capital investment expenses is involved, such as High infrastructure cost i.e. pipeline, road access in fields, land acquisition etc.à Availability of human resources in terms of scarcity of subsurface reservoir engineer and geologist all this contribute to the high barrier of entrance into the industry. POWER OF THE SUPPLIER: The bargaining power of suppliers is relatively high and this is driven by the presence of high cost of switching from one supplier to another and also the presence of relatively small number of energy and alternative energy suppliers (concentrated suppliers), also some of the buyers such as Bp and some other companies that constitute the industry are vertical integration companies so they might not even have the need to want to require the services of this suppliers so the power of the suppliers is Medium. POWER OF BUYERS:à The balance of power shifts toward buyers. Oil is a commodity and one companys oil or oil drilling services is not that much different from another companys and thisà leads buyers toà go in favor of lower prices and or better contract terms.à The power of the buyer will be regarded has being Medium because buyers are powerful and can switch from the consumption of Bp products to another oil and gas companys product and at the same time an individual buyers decision does not necessarily have an impact on the company. THREAT OF SUBSTITUTES: Threat of substitutes is Low and theà Substitutes for the oil and gas industry includes alternative fuels such as coal, gas, solar power, wind power, hydroelectricity and nuclear energy which is still in the developing phase and also involves high cost of production. Oil is of great importance; it is not only used in fuelling cars alone, it is also used in the production of plastics and other materials. Majority of the means of transportation still relies heavily on oil and Oil is needed in order to generate electricity which implies that oil and gas would be depended on rather than the alternative due to its level of development and high cost of production. COMPETITIVE RIVALRY:à The level of competitive rivalry is high; the industry is characterized by big companies which produce low differentiated products and there is low threat of substitute and also low threat of new entrance into the oil and gas industry. Another tool that can also be used in the analysis of the competitive environment of the British Petroleum is the strategy group framework by Porter in 1979. According to porter, a strategic group is defined as a set of companies within an industry pursuing strategies that are similar to each other and different from firms outside the group on one or more key dimensions of their strategy. In terms of the oil and gas industry which BP belongs to, the level of competition is very high because major players in the industry such as Royal Dutch shell, Bp, Exxon Mobil, Total, chevron, and Conoco Phillips all adopt similar strategy and competing on similar bases which is adaptation of a vertical integration to an extent and they also produces similar range of products. BUSINESS STRATEGY OF BRITISH PETROLEUM OVER PAST 5YEARS In analyzing the business strategy being adopted by Bp over the past 5 years, the Bowmans strategic clock would be a useful tool. The strategy clock considers both the price and the perceived added value of goods and services produced by a company and compares it to that of its other competitors. Placing the Bp group under the strategic clock show that the company uses Hybrid strategy which means that they operate at a low cost based, reinvest in low price and differentiated in operation. BP is one of the largest operators and also one of the most well established globally, the company operates both in the upstream and downstream operation and its operations is also increasingly diversified or differentiated in production offering various oil products to the market. At the same time British Petroleum (BP) has a cost base that permits low prices and which is sufficient for reinvestment to maintain bases for differentiation. BP has been adopting the Hybrid strategy for a long period of time now and the sole aim of the strategy is to achieve differentiation and a price lower than that of BPs other competitors.

The Hunters: Phantom Chapter 8
ââ¬Å"It was seriously creepy,â⬠said Bonnie. They had al bundled into Matt's car, Elena hopping onto Stefan's lap and Meredith onto Alaric's (which, Bonnie had noted, Dr. Celia had seemed less than thril ed by). Then they'd hurried back to the boardinghouse, looking for counsel. Once there, they'd al crowded into the parlor and spil ed out the story to Mrs. Flowers, talking over one another in their excitement. ââ¬Å"First Celia's name ââ¬â in my blood ââ¬â appearing out of nowhere,â⬠Bonnie went on, ââ¬Å"and then there's this weird accident that could have killed her, and then Meredith's name appears, too. It was al just real y, real y creepy.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'd put it a bit more strongly than that,â⬠Meredith said. Then she arched an elegant eyebrow. ââ¬Å"Bonnie, this is no doubt the first time I've ever complained you weren't being dramatic enough.â⬠ââ¬Å"Hey!â⬠Bonnie objected. ââ¬Å"There you go,â⬠Elena joked. ââ¬Å"Keep looking on the bright side. The latest insanity is making Bonnie low-key.â⬠Matt shook his head. ââ¬Å"Mrs. Flowers, do you know what's happening?â⬠Mrs. Flowers, seated in a cozy corner chair of the parlor, smiled and patted him on the shoulder. She'd been knitting when they came in, but had laid the pink bundle of yarn aside and had fixed her calm blue eyes on them with her ful attention as they told their story. ââ¬Å"Dear Matt,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Always straight to the point.â⬠Poor Celia had been sitting on the couch by Alaric and Meredith, looking stunned since they'd arrived. It was one thing to study the supernatural, but the reality of a vampire, mysteriously appearing names, and a brush with death must have been a shock to her system. Alaric had a reassuring arm around her shoulders. Bonnie thought maybe the arm should have been around Meredith's shoulders. After al , Meredith's name had just shown up in the scarf's folds. But Meredith was just sitting there, watching Alaric and Celia, her face composed, her eyes unreadable. Now Celia leaned forward and spoke for the first time. ââ¬Å"Pardon me,â⬠she said politely, her voice shaking a bit, ââ¬Å"but I don't understand why we've brought thisâ⬠¦ this issue toâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Her voice trailed off as her eyes flickered to Mrs. Flowers. Bonnie knew what she meant. Mrs. Flowers looked like the epitome of a sweet, dotty elderly lady: soft flyaway gray hair drawn back in a bun, a politely vague expression, a wardrobe that leaned toward pastels or shabby blacks, and a habit of muttering quietly, apparently to herself. A year ago, Bonnie herself had thought Mrs. Flowers was just the crazy old woman who ran the boardinghouse where Stefan lived. But appearances could be deceptive. Mrs. Flowers had earned the respect and admiration of every one of them by the way she had protected the town with her magic, Power, and good sense. There was a lot more to this little old lady than met the eye. ââ¬Å"My dear,â⬠said Mrs. Flowers firmly, ââ¬Å"you've had a very traumatic experience. Drink your tea. It's a special calming blend that's been passed down in my family for generations. We wil do everything we can for you.â⬠Which, Bonnie observed, was a very sweet and ladylike way of putting Dr. Celia Connor in her place. She was to drink her tea and recuperate, and they would figure out how to solve the problem. Celia's eyes flashed, but she sipped her tea obediently. ââ¬Å"Now,â⬠Mrs. Flowers said, looking around at the others, ââ¬Å"it seems to me that the first thing to do is to figure out what the intention is behind the appearance of the names. Once we do that, perhaps we wil have a better idea of who might be behind their appearance.â⬠ââ¬Å"Maybe to warn us?â⬠Bonnie said hesitantly. ââ¬Å"I mean, Celia's name appeared, and then she almost died, and now Meredithâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Her voice trailed off and she looked at Meredith apologetical y. ââ¬Å"I'm worried you might be in danger.â⬠Meredith squared her shoulders. ââ¬Å"It certainly wouldn't be the first time,â⬠she said. Mrs. Flowers nodded briskly. ââ¬Å"Yes, it's possible that the appearance of the names has a benevolent intention. Let's explore that theory. Someone may be trying to get a warning to you. If so, who? And why do they have to do it in this way?â⬠Bonnie's voice was even softer and more hesitant now. But if no one else was going to say it, she would. ââ¬Å"Could it be Damon?â⬠ââ¬Å"Damon's dead,â⬠Stefan said flatly. ââ¬Å"But when Elena was dead, she warned me about Klaus,â⬠Bonnie argued. Stefan massaged his temples. He looked tired. ââ¬Å"Bonnie, when Elena died, Klaus trapped her spirit between dimensions. She hadn't ful y passed away. And even then, she could only visit you in your dreams ââ¬â not anyone else, just you, because you can sense things other people can't. She couldn't make anything happen in the physical world.â⬠Elena's voice trembled. ââ¬Å"Bonnie, the Guardians told us that vampires don't live on after death. In any sense of the word. Damon's gone.â⬠Stefan reached out and took her hand, his eyes troubled. Bonnie felt a sharp stab of sympathy for them both. She was sorry she'd brought Damon up, but she hadn't been able to stop herself. The thought that he might be watching over them, irascible and mocking but ultimately kind, had briefly lifted the weight from her heart. Now that weight came crashing back down. ââ¬Å"Wel ,â⬠she said dul y, ââ¬Å"then I don't have any idea who might be warning us. Does anybody else?â⬠They al shook their heads, baffled. ââ¬Å"Who even knows about us now that has this kind of power?â⬠Matt asked. ââ¬Å"The Guardians?â⬠said Bonnie doubtful y. But Elena shook her head with a quick decisive motion, blond hair swinging. ââ¬Å"It's not them,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"The last thing they'd do is send a message in blood. Visions would be more their style. And I'm pretty sure the Guardians washed their hands of us when they sent us back here.â⬠Mrs. Flowers interlocked her fingers in her lap. ââ¬Å"So perhaps there is some as yet unknown person or being looking after you, warning you of danger ahead.â⬠Matt had been sitting ramrod straight in one of Mrs. Flowers's daintier chairs, and it creaked alarmingly as he leaned forward. ââ¬Å"Um,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"I think the better question is, what's causing that danger?â⬠Mrs. Flowers spread her smal , wrinkled hands. ââ¬Å"You're perfectly right. Let's consider the options. On the one hand, it could be a warning for something that was natural y going to happen. Celia's ââ¬â you don't mind if I cal you Celia, do you, dear?â⬠Celia, stil looking shel -shocked, shook her head. ââ¬Å"Good. Celia's scarf getting caught in the train doors could have been a natural accident. Forgive me for saying so, but those long, dramatic scarves can be very dangerous. The dancer Isadora Duncan was kil ed in just that way when her scarf caught in the wheel of a car many years ago. Perhaps whoever sent the message was simply raising a flag for Celia to be careful, or for the rest of you to take care of her. Perhaps Meredith merely needs to be cautious over the next few days.â⬠ââ¬Å"You don't think so, though, do you?â⬠asked Meredith sharply. Mrs. Flowers sighed. ââ¬Å"This al feels rather malevolent to me. I think if someone wanted to warn you about the possibility of accidents, they could find a better way than names written in blood. Both of these names appeared as the results of rather violent incidents, correct? Bonnie cutting herself and Stefan ripping the scarf from Celia's neck?â⬠Meredith nodded. Looking troubled, Mrs. Flowers continued. ââ¬Å"And, of course, the other possibility is that the appearance of the names is itself malicious. Perhaps the names' appearance is an essential ingredient in or targeting method for some spel that is causing the danger.â⬠Stefan frowned. ââ¬Å"You're talking about dark magic, aren't you?â⬠Mrs. Flowers met his eyes squarely. ââ¬Å"I'm afraid so. Stefan, you're the oldest and most experienced of us by far. I've never heard of anything like this, have you?â⬠Bonnie felt a bit surprised. Of course, she knew that Stefan was much older than even Mrs. Flowers ââ¬â after al , he'd been alive before electricity, or running water, or cars, or anything they took for granted in the modern world, while Mrs. Flowers was probably only in her seventies. But stil , it was easy to forget how long Stefan had lived. He looked just like any other eighteen-year-old, except that he was exceptional y handsome. A traitorous thought flickered at the back of her mind, one she'd had before: How was it that Elena always got al the best-looking guys? Stefan was shaking his head. ââ¬Å"Nothing like this, no. But I think you're right that it may be dark magic. Perhaps, if you spoke to your mother about itâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Celia, who was starting to take more of an interest in what was going on, looked at Alaric quizzical y. Then she cast a glance toward the door, as if expecting a hundredyear-old woman to wander in. Bonnie grinned to herself, despite the seriousness of the situation. They had al gotten so matter-of-fact about Mrs. Flowers's frequent conversations with the ghost of her mother that none of them blinked when Mrs. Flowers gazed off into space and started muttering rapidly, eyebrows lifting, eyes scanning unoccupied space as if someone unseen were speaking to her. But to Celia it must have seemed pretty strange. ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠said Mrs. Flowers, returning her attention to them. ââ¬Å"Mama says there is indeed something dark stirring in Fel ââ¬Ës Church. Butâ⬠ââ¬â her hands lifted, palms empty ââ¬â ââ¬Å"she cannot tel what form it takes. She simply warns us to be careful. Whatever it is, she can sense that it's deadly.â⬠Stefan and Meredith frowned, taking this in. Alaric was murmuring to Celia, probably explaining what was going on. Matt bowed his head. Elena pushed on, already working on the next angle. ââ¬Å"Bonnie, what about you?â⬠she asked. ââ¬Å"Huh?â⬠Bonnie asked. Then she realized what Elena meant. ââ¬Å"No. Nuh-uh. I'm not going to know anything Mrs. Flowers's mother doesn't.â⬠Elena just looked at her, and Bonnie sighed. This was important, after al . Meredith's name was next, and if there was one thing that was true, it was that she and Meredith and Elena had one another's backs. Always. ââ¬Å"Al right,â⬠she said reluctantly. ââ¬Å"I'l see if I can find out anything else. Can you light me a candle?â⬠ââ¬Å"What now?â⬠Celia asked in confusion. ââ¬Å"Bonnie's psychic,â⬠Elena explained simply. ââ¬Å"Fascinating,â⬠Celia said brightly, but her eyes slid, cool and disbelieving, across Bonnie. Wel , whatever. Bonnie didn't care what she thought. She could assume that Bonnie was pretending or crazy if she wanted to, but she'd see what happened eventual y. Elena brought a candle over from its spot on the mantel, lit it, and placed it on the coffee table. Bonnie swal owed, licked her lips, which were suddenly dry, and tried to focus on the candle flame. Although she'd had plenty of practice, she didn't like doing this, didn't like the sensation of losing herself, as if she were sliding underwater. The flame flickered and grew brighter. It seemed to swel and fil Bonnie's field of vision. Al she could see was flame. I know who you are, a cold, rough voice suddenly growled in her ear, and Bonnie twitched. She hated the voices, sometimes as soft as if they were coming from a distant television, sometimes right beside her, like this one. She somehow always managed to forget them until the next time she began to fal into a trance. A faraway child's voice began a wordless off-key humming, and Bonnie focused on making her breathing slow and steady. She could feel her eyes slipping out of focus. A sour taste, wet and nasty, fil ed her mouth. Envy twisted, sharp and bitter, inside her. It's not fair, not fair, something muttered sul enly in her skul . And then blackness took over. Elena watched apprehensively as Bonnie's pupils widened, reflecting the candle flame. Bonnie was able to sink into trances much more quickly now than when she had begun having them, which worried Elena. ââ¬Å"Darkness rises.â⬠A flat, hol ow voice that didn't sound anything like Bonnie's came from her friend's mouth. ââ¬Å"It's not here yet, but it wants to be. It's cold. It's been cold for a long time. It wants to be near us, out of the darkness and as warm as our hearts. It hates.â⬠ââ¬Å"Is it a vampire?â⬠asked Meredith quickly. The not-Bonnie voice gave a harsh, choking laugh. ââ¬Å"It's much stronger than any vampire. It can find a home in any of you. Watch one another. Watch yourselves.â⬠ââ¬Å"What is it?â⬠asked Matt. Whatever it was that spoke through Bonnie hesitated. ââ¬Å"She doesn't know,â⬠said Stefan. ââ¬Å"Or she can't tel us. Bonnie,â⬠he said intently, ââ¬Å"is someone bringing this thing to us? Who's causing it?â⬠No hesitation this time. ââ¬Å"Elena,â⬠it said. ââ¬Å"Elena brought it.ââ¬

The world we live in today is a very competitive place. There is a constant competition going on to find jobs and move up the ladder of success. As human beings we are naturally devoted to instilling some kind of success in our children. To ensure that children are successful in life they need to be well disciplined but also socially and morally developed human beings. It is the parentââ¬â¢s duty to keep their children well disciplined along with giving them the opportunity to develop socially and morally. But how is it possible to approach this task correctly? These children were found to be more adept at social skills, better at relating to others and problem solving. Two of the best methods used for modifying your childrenââ¬â¢s behaviour are through positive and negative reinforcement. Unlike punishment, these two methods are safe and will not lead to aggressive behaviour in your children. The main idea of these methods is to shape your childrenââ¬â¢s behaviour through the use of consequences. Consequences can be effective tools in motivating human beings to behave. ââ¬Å"A human being fashions his consequences as surely as he fashions his goods or dwellings. Nothing that he says, thinks or does is without consequenceâ⬠(Norman Cousin). In psychological terms reinforcement can be defined as any event that strengthens the behaviour it follows. Both positive and negative reinforcement can strengthen behaviour where both punishment and extinction will weaken behaviour in your children. Positive reinforcers are something like rewards. However, positive reinforcement can be defined more specifically than just that of a reward. Three different conditions have to be met in order to correctly use positive reinforcement.
